FLAG RAISING CEREMONY
IN COMMEMORATION OF THE 63rd ANNIVERSARY
OF INDONESIA'S INDEPENDENCE
17 AUGUST 2008

 

In commemoration of the 63rd Anniversary of Indonesia's Independence, the Indonesian Consulate General in Cape Town has convened a flag raising ceremony on Sunday, 17 August 2008 at 10 a.m. sharp at the Indonesian Consulate General’s premises, 124 Rosmead Avenue, Kenilworth. The ceremony was attended by about 250 participants, which consisted of members of the Indonesian seaman, the Indonesian community in Cape Town; members of 'Dharma Wanita Persatuan; Cape Malays community and South African counterparts as well as all of the Consulate's staff.

As part of the ceremony, Consul General of Indonesia, Mr. Andradjati presented an award to 3 local staffs of the Consulate for their dedication and loyalty. The awards for the local staff were bestowed to Mr Wiza Rusmanyah, Mr Indra Syair and Mrs. Masnoena Ismail, who have dedicated for 10 years or more to the Consulate. The day was rounded off by lowering the flag at 5 p.m.

 

In conjunction with the Independence Day, Indonesian Consulate in cooperation with Radio Voice of the Cape has launched an Indonesian Connection in order to build on the historical relationship between the Cape based descendants and their ancestors. The opening program will be broadcast on Thursday 28 August 2008 at 9.00-10 a.m. The program will be on air every Thursday morning, 9.00-10.00 a.m. (alternate week/ every 2 weeks on 100.4 fm) and playback every Sunday evening, 9.00-10.00 p.m. (alternate week) through the frequency of 95.8. The listener could also listen to the program through audio streaming at www.vocfm.co.za.

In addition to the commemoration of Indonesia’s Independence Day, the Consulate General organised a number of additional events such as Sports Day and Fun Day. Games and competitions were held for both young and old members of the Indonesian community in Cape Town. The lucky winners received their prizes during the National Day celebrations.
The celebration of the Independence Day was continued with the cocktail reception for members of parliament of RSA, members of diplomatic corps as well as guests from partner institutions and the Indonesian Community at the Kelvin Grove Club on August 18 2008. Mr Imam Gassan Solomon, an Indonesian descendent as well as Member of Parliament of RSA, was the Guest of Honour for the event. The ceremonies were conducted exclusively in Indonesia and the guests were entertained with some Indonesian songs and dances.
